ENG510 GDB 1 Fall 2020 Solution idea:
The subject of Sociolinguistics includes different concepts language variations, code switching, code mixing, dialects e.g. register, and sociolinguistic aspects of language in Pakistan. Discuss any two concepts that you like the most along with the reason.
I like the most language variation because it is considered important in language teaching because its contribution of cultural values regards to the different ways of using the language functions or other aspects of language like vocabulary, pronunciation and so far so forth. So that students know how to adjust themselves while interacting in intercultural communication in order to maintain politeness and avoid miscommunication. Variability is inherent in human language: a single speaker will use different linguistic forms on different occasions, and different speakers of a language will express the same meanings using different forms. Most of this variation is highly
systematic: speakers of a language make choices in pronunciation, morphology, word choice, and grammar depending on a number of non-linguistic factors. These factors include the speaker's purpose in communication, the relationship between speaker and hearer, the production circumstances, and various demographic affiliations that a speaker can have. Secondly I like the topic dialects as it is any variety of a language characterized by systematic differences in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary from other varieties of the same language. So differences make me curious. Everyone speaks a dialect in fact, many dialects at different levels.
Why do you think people code switch in different situations? Discuss with reference to the Pakistani society. Pakistan is a socially close-knit, multilingual society where a major population is either bilingual or multilingual. A large population speaks local languages as their mother tongue; Urdu as the national language and educated Pakistanis also know English, which is language of academia. The multilingual speakers switch from one language to another to achieve communicative goals. There are many reasons and situations under which young Pakistanis mix and switch English or other codes in their speech, i.e to convey the message effectively, to influence the listener, to pose better social status, to exclude third person, while forgetting any term in one language, while quoting someone’s exact words, while some alternate term is not present in one language, while getting emotional, while showing their extreme annoyance with someone, because of liking the language, because of motivation to do so as they find majority of people around the globe doing so, because of the need of the hour.
